Chemical kinetics, which is a branch of physical chemistry, includes catalysis as a particular case. All the problems of catalysis (including the choice of catalysts) boil down to the fundamental problems of chemical kinetics, i.e. to the establishment of the elementary chemical processes which a process as a whole is formed of, and to the derivation of a law according to which a process proceeds in time. At present a multitude of monographs and articles in journals are devoted to separate problems of chemical kinetics. For this reason the authors found the task of selecting the required material for a special course in chemical kinetics and catalysis a quite difficult one. A subjective attitude to the subject inevitably manifests itself in selecting the material for a book, although the authors try their hardest to be objective in assessing certain views or works. How successful the choice of the required material has been made will be shown by the experience gained in using the present text as a training aid. Some of the topics considered in the present volume are also studied in the course of physical chemistry. They have been repeated here only to ensure the complete and systematic exposition of the material and to help students to remember the fundamental propositions of chemical kinetics and catalysis. The book should be read after completing the first three years of a chemical faculty of a university or an institute of chemical technology. The present volume will be useful not only for senior students of chemical faculties of universities specializing in the field of physical chemistry, but also for senior students specializing in chemical technology, and for post-graduates, engineers and scientists having to do with chemical processes.
