Importance of optoelectronic based systems beyond boundaries of Fibre Optic Communication has been established by scientists, researchers and engineers. Next to communication, impact of optoelectronics on Instrumentation systems (sensors, signal processing and data transmission) is quite intensive. Though its full potential is yet to be explored, the state-of-the-art systems developed have been able to solve many engineering and scientific measurement and instrumentation problems in very novel ways.

Objective of this book is to give the readers a glimpse of the applications of optoelectronics in instrumentation area. The target group is primarily the senior undergraduates and postgraduates specialising in Measurement and Instrumentation as a major, for whom it may serve as a textbook. The practicing engineers and researchers, on the other hand, seeking exposure to advanced techniques of measurement, more specifically to optoelectronics-based techniques, may find this' book as an essential reference book as well.

Dr. M. K. Ghosh, former Professor in Electrical Engineering and Dean of Academic Affairs, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur graduated from Bengal Engineering College (presently known as BESU), Sibpur, then affiliated to University of Calcutta, West Bengal in 1961. He then served Power Sector for three years. Hewentto USSR on an exchange programme and obtained his Ph.D. degree in Automation and Control from VI. Lenin (Ulianov) Electrical Engineering Institute, Leningrad in 1968. After a brief stay in B.E. College for three years he moved to IIT-Khargapur, where he served till superannuation, barring two years of deputation period to Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad. Dr. Ghosh was the Coordinator of B.Tech. and M.Tech. Programmes in Instrumentation Engineering at IIT-Kharagpur. He was responsible for establishment of Optoelectronics-based Instrumentation Laboratory in the Department and initiating research in this area. Dr. Ghosh has over 80 publications and four Indian Patents to his credit. His research interests are in Instrumentation, Control Systems and Mine Electricity. Professor Ghosh, in the post superannuation period, is actively pursuing faculty development programmes also.
