Secondly, the author believes that this handbook can serve as a manual for reviewing the essentials of mathematics and even as a first introductory course in its practical applications. It is wise to pay careful attention to the historical surveys contained in each division. They form an integral part of the book and contribute greatly to a deeper understanding of the subject. The reader who desires to use this manual as a textbook should pay particular attention to the worked examples. Any proofs that are omitted in the handbook can be filled out by reference to a textbook on the subject either at the same time or later.
